Generic Allerga is an antihistamine drug that is used to reduce the effect of natural histamine in the body. This histamine causes sneezing, itching, runny nose, watery eyes, etc. In addition to this, Allerga, in adults & children, is used for the treatment of chronic idiopathic urticarial where skin itching and hives occurs.

Fexofenadine is available in the market under the trade name of Allegra, Fexidine, Telfast, Fastofen, Tilfur, Telfexo, Allerfexo, Vifas, etc. at different places.

Fexofenadine was manufactured by the company Sepracor, a biotechnology based company, located at Massachusetts, in 1993. It is then sold to Hoechast Marion Roussel that is now a part of Sanofi-Aventis and in 1996 approved by FDA. Over the counter sales of Allergen was approved in United States by FDA on 25 January, 2011.

 The active ingredient present in generic Allegra is Fexofenadine hydrochloride and therefore it is also known by the name of Fexofenadine. Allerga tablet is available in the strength of 30 mg, 120 mg, 180 mg and it contains various excipients such as magnesium stearate, pregelatinized starch, microcrystalline cellulose and croscarmellose sodium. In addition to this, the aqueous tablet’s film coating contains iron oxide blend, hypromellose, polyethylene glycol, silicon dioxide, povidone and titanium dioxide.

The disintegrated tablet of Allerga contains 30 mg of fexofenadine hydrochloride and also various excipients such as citric acid anhydrous, crospovidone, magnesium stearate, mannitol, microcrystalline cellulose, sodium starch glycolate, natural  & artificial orange flavour, artificial cream flavour, sodium bicarbonate, methacrylate copolymer, etc.

In addition to this, Allerga is also available in oral suspension form that is white uniform suspension and contains 6 mg of fexofenadine hydrochloride per millilitre. It also contains different excipients such as propylene glycol, edetate disodium, xanthan gum, titanium dioxide, sodium phosphate dibasic hepta hydrate, artificial raspberry cream flavour, etc.

When Allegra is taken orally, almost one-third of the drug is absorbed in the blood and maximum plasma concentration is reached after 1-3 hours. Allegra is effective after 1-24 hours of its intake. However, it shows its maximum effectiveness after 6 hours. A small percentage of Allegra is metabolized to methyl ester and azacyclonol in the liver and rest is eliminated from body via urine and faeces.

Mechanism of action:

 Allegra shows no anticholinergic (an agent that is responsible for blocking the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the central &peripheral nervous system), alpha 1-adrenergic, beta-adrenergic-receptor-blocking effect. It does not cross the brain barrier and therefore do not cause drowsiness.

Indication:

Allegra is used to treat symptoms of allergy such as runny nose, sneezing, etc.

Drug Interactions:

 It is very important to reveal to your if you are taking any medicines that is making you feel sleepy such as sedatives, narcotic pain, sleeping pill, muscle relaxer, cold & allergy medicines, etc. as is can add to sleepiness that is caused by Allegra.

If you are using Ketoconazole and Erythromycin, then they should tell about this to the doctor. 

  • For seasonal allergic rhinitis & chronic idiopathic urtricaria, the recommended dose for children between the age group of 12 years & above and adults, Allerga tablets should be given 60 mg twice or 180 mg once daily with water. Those who are having decreased renal function should take 60 mg of Allegra as starting dose one time daily.
  • For children between the age group of 6-11 years, Allegra tablets should be given 30 mg two times along with water and same dose is also beneficial for paediatric patient with decreased renal function.
  • For the treatment of Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis, 30 mg (5 ml) of the oral suspension of Allegra for the children between the age group of 2-11 years, two times daily and one time is suggested for paediatric patients with decreased renal function daily.
  • The recommended oral suspension of Allegra for the treatment of Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria for Children of age group 2 to 11 years is 5 ml twice in a day and 2.5 ml for children of age group 6 months to less than 2 years of age once in a day.

Missed dose:

In case you miss the dose, you should take it as soon as it is remembered. If it is time for the next dose by the time you come to know about the missed dose then you should skip the missed dose and take the regular dose. In any case, extra medicine should not be taken to make up the missed dose.

Overdose:

The overdose of Allegra might cause dizziness, dry mouth and drowsiness. Therefore, you should not take overdose of the medicines. Consult your doctor if you suspect overdose. 

The immunity of varies from person to person for same drug and therefore the tolerance power also varies. For the same drug, some patients might show allergic reaction while other leads a perfect life without any side effect.

Some of the patients, after the intake of Allegra might show allergic reaction such as hives, breathing problem, swelling in lips, face, tongue, throat, etc.  In addition to this, some of you might also experience following side effects:

  • Body ache
  • Cough
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhoea
  • Stomach upset
  • Menstrual cramps

  • You should not take fruit juices (apple, orange, etc. and antacid while using Fexofenadine as it makes the body harder to digest the medicines.

  • In case you are showing allergic reaction such as difficulty in breathing, hives, etc. you should stop taking Allegra and consult your medical advisor before the condition becomes worse.
  • Allegra might affect unborn baby. So if you are pregnant or planning for the same, then you should consult doctor for the use of Allegra.
